Increased Grain Crop Production Intensifies the Water Crisis in Northern China

چکیده
Abstract Growing crop production increases agricultural water consumption (AWC), but whether these two factors are matched in northern and southern China the past decades remains controversial. Here we used a remote sensing‐based water‐carbon coupling model combined with satellite observations to quantify production, AWC, deficit changes over 2003–2018. We show that China, AWC significantly ( p < 0.05) increased, mainly due planting area expansion, increasing rates were 2.6 6.2 times greater than those China. The irrigation demand greatly reduced availability of stored terrestrial could not be met by supply next decades. Our results conflict between limited cannot resolved South‐to‐North Water Diversion Project, better management resources is needed achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Agriculture intensifies soil moisture decline in Northern China
Northern China is one of the most densely populated regions in the world. Agricultural activities have intensified since the 1980s to provide food security to the country. However, this intensification has likely contributed to an increasing scarcity in water resources, which may in turn be endangering food security. Based on in-situ measurements of soil moisture collected in agricultural plots...
متن کاملImproving water use in crop production.
Globally, agriculture accounts for 80-90% of all freshwater used by humans, and most of that is in crop production. In many areas, this water use is unsustainable; water supplies are also under pressure from other users and are being affected by climate change. Much effort is being made to reduce water use by crops and produce 'more crop per drop'. This paper examines water use by crops, taking...
متن کاملSpatiotemporal Variations of Reference Crop Evapotranspiration in Northern Xinjiang, China
To set up a reasonable crop irrigation system in the context of global climate change in Northern Xinjiang, China, reference crop evapotranspiration (ET0) was analyzed by means of spatiotemporal variations. The ET0 values from 1962 to 2010 were calculated by Penman-Monteith formula, based on meteorological data of 22 meteorological observation stations in the study area. The spatiotemporal vari...
